Jacob Sutton
I chose to recreate Sutton's images as I feel they represent darkness and death. He has photographed a girl under cloudy water with her hair floating, the only area in focus is the subjects face. The subject shows sadness and suffering through the expression on her face. I feel as though the girl looks like she is drowning, this links into the idea of water as a metaphor for life and for death. The image can also be seen completely differently, as a sign of peace and tranquillity after someone has let go, ended their struggle. The artists images are all grey scale and are quite dark with a paler negative space, the model is positioned in the middle of the frame so that the emphasis is on her rather than the negative space in the image. Sutton used lighting from above however it is quite subtle and leaves gentle shadows cascading down her face. Editing wise there is minimal contrast in the image.
To recreate these Images I photographed my model lay down in the studio with a white background. I displayed her hair to look as though it was floating in water whilst placing a few strands across her face. I used studio lighting to take my images using two soft-boxes with a bright flash, fast shutter speed and relatively low ISO meaning it had a lower sensitivity to light. To edit my images I turned the brightness and contrast down on them, I then used a large brush with a soft edge in a dark blue/grey colour set on a very low opacity and layered it onto the image creating a musky kind of effect. I then duplicated the layer and used field blur on the top layer, I then rubbed areas of the top layer off using a low opacity rubber to reveal certain in focus areas e.g. the eyes this was to draw the viewers eyes in and highlight the facial expression and message of the images.

Jovana Rikalo
IRikalo is a portrait photographer, I feel as though her images of a model in the bath represent the same thing as the images above, peace and tranquillity at the end of a struggle perhaps after death, this is why i decided to use Rikalo as a development of Jacob Sutton. Rikalo uses low saturation and white water with a pale model, this makes the red of the lips and the rose stand out more. The rose is what I see first therefore I believe this is the focus of the image. At a funeral people lay flowers on the casket of a relative or friend therefore I feel this emphasis on the rose links Rikalo's shoot into my project. When recreating these images I made the rose the focus, I decided not to do the red lips but to emphasise the paleness of the skin and lips which to me represent death. for a few images i positioned the models arms in a cross over her chest as I feel this is the way people are positioned in a casket. I ran a bath and put milk in, I kept doing this until it reached the opacity I preferred, then laid the rose over her. I took lots of pictures from variant distances and angles with my model in different positions so I could find the shot I was looking for. To edit the images I simply created a saturation mask and dulled it down a lot rubbing out the mask over the rose so it was still bright. I also brightened the image a lot in general as I felt like this made more emphasis on the rose and my models face/hair, it also helped the water fade into the bath a bit more so that the bath wasn't such a predominant feature.
